The Peanut
Marketing Order for the Florida Peanut Producers Association was
established in 1975 for the purpose of promotion, education and research
in order to enhance the peanut farmers in Florida in their endeavors
to make a profit in peanut farming.
The
Statute also established a Peanut Advisory Council, appointed by
the Commissioner of Agriculture. The nominees are submitted by
producers from various peanut producing counties.
Their duties are:
1. To recommend to
the department administrative rules and regulations relating to the
Marketing Order.
2. To
receive and report to the department complaints or violations of
the Marketing Order.
3. To
recommend to the department any amendments to the Marketing Order.
4. To
advise the department in the assessment of members and in the collection
of funds to cover expenses incurred by the department.
5. To
advise the department in the collection and dissemination of information
and data which
the department may deem necessary.
The
Florida Peanut Producers
Association original Marketing Order called for not more than $2.00
per ton check-off from the growers, with a clause allowing growers
to get the monies back if they decide not to participate.
In
early 1990, the Peanut Advisory Council voted for Florida Peanut
Producers Association to put forth a referendum to it's members to
amend the Marketing Order to read: To increase check-off dollars
to $3.00 per ton and this be mandatory with no refunds. This
referendum passed in the summer of 1990 by 90% of the growers voting
and was initiated for the 1990 crop.
One-third
of all check-off dollars collected are sent to IFAS of the University
of Florida to be used for peanut production research. The remaining
two-thirds are used by the Florida Peanut Producers Association for
promotion and education.
